in front of the entrance of College of Medicine, Cheng-Hsing Campus.

The bronze sculpture Piper portrays a shawl-wrapped man who sits alone on a pedestal, looking into the distance and playing beautiful melodies with a flute. This work visualizes a self-composed mental state wholly exempt from all the vexations of the mundane world, thereby epitomizing the slow pace of rural life. Draped over the shoulders of the piper is a soft, cascading shawl. The piper’s ripped muscles, along with his hanging feet and slightly leaning posture, serve as a perfect foil to the gently flowing melodies. The bronze texture brings the piper an eclectic mix of brawniness and tenderness. Its simplicity, without any trace of adornment, echoes the admirable qualities of calmness and stability displayed by the creative medium. This work conveys an image of rural people who are fairly content with their own lives, as reflected in the smile lighting up the piper’s face that implies his satisfaction of snatching a few leisure hours from work, through which the artist attempts to express the idea of living for the moment or cherishing the present. The artist has tried to create an undisturbed spiritual sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle of the world. The work Piper thereby serves as a source of such a sense of happiness and tranquility in the hectic urban life of modern day Taiwan. This work is displayed in front of the building of the College of Medicine, surrounded by flowers and plants. Affected by the pleasant and comfortable atmosphere, visitors will be brought to a temporary halt, admiring this work and pondering their own way to make every moment perfect.
