The bronze sculpture People on Earth consists of a group of effigies revolving around a main body that conveys the image of maternal love. The artist expects to honor our ancestors by describing their arduous journey to Taiwan where they endured great hardships in reclaiming the wasteland. The main body resembles a cradle or a ship that carries a group of people on its back, making it their sanctuary. The main body vigorously spreads its wings like a bird, as if it is soaring to great heights. Then it takes deep root into the earth with a great sense of momentum, and thereby symbolizes the goddess Gaia, the personification of the Earth, the great mother of all. The main body of great inclusiveness quells the fears of the people. Their powerful torsos imply their indomitable spirit and unflagging energy. They help each other and show the power of cohesion, collectively marching towards the same direction and expressing the same unswerving faith. The work People on Earth is lodged in a profound collective consciousness, appearing in a position closely analogous to the roots of the trees by which it is surrounded. The bronze used in creating this sculpture brings a sense of going through the mill, and the layered texture creates a strong sense of heaviness. The unique color of bronze includes a hint of oxidized blue, giving this work the qualities of calmness and restraint. Lin pays tribute to our ancestors with People on Earth. It is both a congenial visual communication brimming with social concerns and natural affinity with the land, and a paradigmatic work epitomizing cohesion and fearlessness, a masterpiece that transcends the confines of space-time and encourages deeper contemplation.
