Aspects of My Artistic Life is a brilliant series created by artist Shi-Chi Lee. It consists of ten single or series of works that touch upon ten arbitrarily selected subjects. Aspects of My Artistic Life – Pleasure clearly demonstrates Lee’s style modification from untrammeled, casual yet elegant expression to one that is simple and tranquil. The color arrangement also changed from vivid scarlet to azure with hints of pale gray and emerald green. The composition of Aspects of My Artistic Life – Pleasure can be divided into four parts. The flaming red background conveys a festive and convivial atmosphere. In the center is a milky white cloud drifting across the vibrant red sky, embodying the philosophy of a “floating life.” The surface of this work bristles with diagonally arranged black blots. The imprint-like blots further bring a sense of heaviness against the foil of red and white colors. Such a detachable and restructurable composition faithfully visualizes the metamorphosis Lee has undergone in terms of his frame of mind; to wit, from profundity, vigor and flamboyance to simplicity and non-materialism. By happenstance the artist’s metamorphosis implicitly echoes the contemporary social development of Taiwan. Text/ Jun-Dao Li Translator/ Sheng-Chih Wang
