黃啟龍   Huang, Ci-Long   1923~

Ci-Long Huang, courtesy name Bo-Xiang, was born in Putien City, Fujian province, China in 1923. Graduated from Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Huang tends to create new meanings from age-old traditions and apply Zao Zhang’s theory in the Tang Dynasty that suggested “reaching out to imitate nature and turning inward to master the mind” as the core of his oeuvre. His flowers-and-birds paintings are so outstanding that earned him the title “Master of Peony Painting” among Taiwanese painters. In addition, he is proficient in Chinese and Western paintings as well as in design, which is why he has been hailed as an “artistic genius of Putien” and a “versatile painter.” Nonetheless, he remains modest and seeks neither fame nor fortune. He works diligently, making the strokes and artistic conceptions of his oeuvre nothing if not charming. Huang used to serve a number of positions, such as a jury member for major official exhibitions, a member of the preparatory committee and jury for the National Fine Arts Exhibition, a professor of Chinese painting at Taiwan Provincial Teachers’ College, Ming Chuan College, National Taiwan Arts Education Center, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum. He has devoted all his life to arts education, and has disciples all over the world. His works have been widely collected by connoisseurs in Europe, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korean, and the United States. He is the chairperson of the Art Society of China, the Taiwanese Water Color Society, the Chinese Writers’ Association, and the Chinese Art Association. His publications include the Album of Ink Paintings by Ci-Long Huang, and the Album of Flowers-and-Birds Paintings.
